The trait they have in common is that they are always using others around them for their own benefit, without empathy and without remorse. I think that the two are sociopaths. Madoff acted that way perhaps because he got bored of seeing all his lies work so perfectly. It may've challenged him to try getting the truth known, and if he can get out of all its troubles.
